MOSCOW, March 17 (RAPSI) – Yandex would not be able to follow requirements introduced by the current version of a bill that equates news aggregators and other media, RIA Novosti reported on Thursday citing representative of the company.
In February, several lawmakers submitted the bill to the State Duma. According to the initiative, news aggregators such as Yandex will have to check the validity of distributed information. At the same time a share of foreign financing in news aggregators will have to be limited to 20%. Failure to abide with these requirements will result in fines that can reach as far as 3 million rubles ($42,200).
Yandex executive on legal matters, Ekaterina Fadeeva, said that any legislation should make sense to its subjects as well as be practicable.
She added that some of the requirements in the bill are impossible to follow. For example, there is no way to pre-moderate all news on the aggregators because of the sheer amount of traffic passed through an aggregator. In addition, Yandex believes that there is no way to objectively check the information shared by media and that those entities are already responsible for their content, according to Russian legislation.Tags: IP News, Legislation, Mass media, Russia, Russia IP news, Russia Media Bill, Yandex
